Welcome to ACIH
The Academic Collaborative for Integrative Health (ACIH) is involved in and supports a wide range of activities and projects in the areas of education, clinical care, research and policy that contribute to transforming our health care system to be one that emphasizes the importance of creating health and well-being. ACIH, formed in 2004, now has a strong national voice. We represent 18 national integrative health and medicine organizations, many universities, colleges and programs and have a wide variety of supporters and volunteers. ACIH strengthens understanding and cooperation among educators, researchers, and clinicians from distinct healthcare disciplines. We believe that quality patient care requires that we shift our disease-based, fractionalized system to one that is team-based, collaborative and patient centered as well as to one that focuses significantly more on creating health and well-being.
To advance our mission:
We ADVOCATE for a healthcare system that creates health and well-being. We ADVOCATE for the values and practices associated with integrative health and medicine.
We COLLABORATE with organizations to explore common issues and participate in collaborative projects that support our mission and vision.
We EDUCATE the ACIH community to current thought leaders and significant movements in the field, and by aggregating and disseminating practical information on how to 'do' integration and collaborative practice in health care. And, we educate the other healthcare disciplines on the depth, breadth and value of the disciplines we represent.
Our core Organizational Membership consists of councils of colleges and schools, accrediting agencies, and certification and testing organizations associated with the five licensed integrative health and medicine professions that have a federally recognized accrediting agency. These are:
- acupuncture and Oriental medicine
- direct entry (home birth) midwifery
- massage therapy, and
- naturopathic medicine
Our membership also includes organizations representing Traditional World Medicines and Emerging Professions that are engaging the self-regulatory challenges that help protect the health of the public. Individual programs, schools and universities accredited by these special purpose accrediting agencies are also eligible for membership.
While ACIH's base is our membership, our operations model is to develop investment via grants and philanthropic partners. Groups of Project Partners and Sustaining Investors allow us to engage the priorities we collaboratively establish. Contributions from Associate Members /Supporting Members as well as corporate/business supporters and individual/organizational investors who support our mission and vision are welcome.
Our individual university, college and schools members, and relevant programs associated with our educational institutions each offer educational programs and clinical services, and many have research departments as well. Information is available on the Individual Colleges member list.
While our base is in these five distinctly licensed professions, we are actively engaged in diverse projects with our colleagues in conventional (MD) medicine, nursing and other allied health disciplines. Our Council of Advisors reflects this reach. We welcome the participation of other individuals, institutions and businesses that support our work either via our Associate Members category or under our Philanthropic levels. Each will be honored on this site, will receive the electronic ACIH newsletter and have the opportunity to participate in various ACIH activities.
